ABSTRACT

Assessment with more than one client can often present a challenge. This chapter demonstrates the effective way that initial sessions with couples can help to identify the ecological issues of family origins and environmental influences that would present in the course of couples counseling. The interactive expressive techniques of the FLSD helps the therapist join both members of the couple and then provides a visual way to develop a participatory treatment contract. Family of origin and attachment issues are visually depicted in the course of developing the drawing. Three examples of couples presenting with different types of counseling issues demonstrate the possibilities for obtaining a level of information that interviews alone would be unable to provide.
