ABSTRACT

Threats to one’s own wellness abound for the rural provider. Rural providers are less likely to have their own consultation, therapy, and support. They may feel simultaneously on display and incredibly isolated. They may also struggle to find the support they need, given that the same resource limitations impact clients and clinicians alike. Further, the need in rural communities is significant, and it may be impossible, given provider shortages, for the supply to ever meet the demand. Rural clinicians must take extra care to attend to their own psychological needs, boundaries, and mental wellness. Using clinical material, the author suggests a pathway forward toward sustainability through self-care.
