ABSTRACT

Wizards can be indicated supernaturally, according to the Shona, in a number of ways. However, dreams of wizardry are said to be in a rather different category since, if one dreams of wizardry and wakes up feeling weak and exhausted, there can be little doubt that one has, indeed, been wizarded. Wizards can be indicated supernaturally, according to the Shona, in a number of ways. Perhaps the most important of these is by means of dreams and through the intervention of the ngozi of the deceased. According to a Shona informant, some people have a reputation for dreaming true dreams; but the ordinary person can only tell if a dream has revealed the truth after the event foretold has taken place or if he consults a diviner. Before giving an extract from the complainant's evidence a short account of Shona belief in the matter is necessary.
