ABSTRACT
Chapter 1 describes the paleoethnobotanical approach and introduces the major kinds of archaeobotanical remains—macroremains (seeds, fruits, underground storage organs, wood), pollen, phytoliths, and starch grains—and discusses how they are studied. Developing a comparative collection is described, and examples of online resources for identifying archaeobotanical remains are provided.
