ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on computers but it will be remembered that this is being given a broad definition, to include other forms of computational and communication devices. The fact that hacking involves a broad range of behaviour has meant that some believe a more scientific approach to defining hacker behaviour is required. Hacking is an interesting phenomenon because it is an issue that is in the consciousness of most computer users and it carries with it a particular stigma, a belief that it is one of the more ominous forms of cybercrime. The public perception of hacking is undoubtedly affected by media attention and whilst some believe that ‘hacking has become one of the most recognised and feared threats in cyberspace’, others believe that there could be a moral panic surrounding hacking. The principal attack that takes place against technology is that of malware, that is, software that targets computers for malicious purposes.
