ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the psychological and social effects of participating in rituals and of observing those that perform them. Relevant theories include ideas about the evolution of ritualized behavior, the memorability and social dynamics of rituals, group identity in ritual, and the reputation of those who perform rituals. The chapter draws from developmental, ethnographic, and experimental research. The chapter highlights research on mortuary rituals, which demonstrates the unique contribution of CSR research to explain ritual behavior.
