ABSTRACT

Communication is of critical importance in a child’s ability to learn, develop and form relationships. Language Disorder and Speech Disorder are two clinically distinct conditions, either of which can impair a child’s ability to communicate effectively. Selective Mutism is a different form of communication problem, where the child is selectively mute in some situations but not others. This chapter provides checklists to help identify these three special needs and profile students’ individual differences. Supporting notes include information about each of these communication disorders, suggested strategies for supporting the student in the classroom, recommended further reading and information about useful organizations and their web sites.
