ABSTRACT

The previous chapters have provided checklists and supporting notes for 20 different categories of special need. Parents and the students themselves have the right to be involved in discussions relating to the identification or diagnosis of special needs and plans for intervention. This chapter provides three Discussion Guides to help professionals frame constructive conversations with parents, students and colleagues.

Parents anxious to help their child with special needs can be vulnerable to unscrupulous people selling ‘miracle cures‘ or ineffective programs. A handout is included to help parents select a reputable, trustworthy professional to provide extra help where this is sought. This chapter also provides four charts to help in the selection of the most appropriate checklist in the book.
