ABSTRACT
Greed could be conceptualized as a gluttony for money or material things, lust as a gluttony for sexual pleasure, envy as a gluttony for status. Gluttony began with the 1956 American Medical Association declaration that alcoholism was a disease, a conceptualization subsequently transferred to the excessive use of drugs other than alcohol, then to compulsive over-eating. In virtually all cases, Step One of the Twelve is to admit that people are powerless to control peoples disease, another giant step toward excusing all sorts of ill-considered behaviors and, thus, liberating gluttons of every description from taking any personal responsibility for their sorry, pathetic selves. Capitalism encourages us to pamper and feed our every desire. Whether it is food and drink, or technology, or entertainment, more is always better. Obesity and being over-weight are not randomly distributed in the US. In general, men are more likely to be overweight or obese than women, and duodenal conditions tend generally to increase with age.
