ABSTRACT

Ignatius school is an East coast suburban boys' Jesuit day school of approximately 970 students. The school is located a few miles outside an urban industrial city. The Ignatius service program furthers the school's educational aims according to the associate headmaster: "The school's commitment to action is the result of the Jesuit's thinking about education: Kids ought to be committed to justice. The original program director has since left the school. His decision to leave Ignatius was based, in large part, on the current headmaster's decision not to fill a teaching position in the service department; more specifically, an Ethics teacher informed the director and headmaster in April 1987 that she would not be returning to Ignatius. The Ignatius school community service program is currently in a state of transition since the founding director abruptly left the school. Ignatius students showed the smallest gains of any Jesuit secondary school.
