ABSTRACT

John Calvin wrote, “Nearly all the wisdom we possess, that is to say, true and sound wisdom, consists of two parts: the knowledge of God and of ourselves”. There are two great theories inherent to gestalt therapy and Christianity. In gestalt therapy there are three ways of viewing the action of the self: id function, ego function, and personality function. Ego function expresses the organism’s capacity for contact in a different way. Personality function expresses the capacity of the organism for contact on the basis of what one has become. Salvation can be understood as regeneration. Regeneration is also linked to justification, because the grace in regeneration requires a forensic shift to take place. As growth and development are distinguished from birth, so sanctification is distinct from regeneration. Fritz Perls asserted that curiosity about the way people function in the world leads to “the study of what goes on at the contact boundary between the individual and his environment.
