ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a story of Bret who had been a carpenter for over thirty years until he fell from a roofing job and broke his back. After recovery, he was never as productive, and eventually he started staying home instead of trying to find new work. He always thought of his wife who died two years after the accident. He and his wife used to sit on the deck and enjoy the woods and the animals. They used to take the boat out onto the lake. He searched the shoreline of the lake all around, but nobody could be seen. The quiet solitude of the place stirred him. He had felt loneliness before meeting her—when he was younger. Back then he did frantic things to be with people, and when he could not find anyone with whom to eat food, watch a movie, or share his bed, he felt abandoned, desolate, and dismally empty.
