ABSTRACT

Sociology creates an intersection of empirical research and theoretical analysis around specific social issues such as race and racism. Racial differences exist at all points of the cultural diamond. Misrepresentation is key for thinking about the relationship between race and popular culture. Racial minorities are underrepresented in the labor force for cultural production. White characters in television, film, and literature live affluent lifestyles and are more likely to be represented in a predominantly positive way. They seem to always be the heroes, even when they are at their worst. Sports journalist Dave Zirin has used his career to press for more open discussion of the politics of sports, including racial politics. Despite underrepresentation, racial minorities are consuming popular culture at high rates, and they are doing some very interesting work to decide what it means and how they will use it in their everyday lives.
