ABSTRACT

Chapter 1 notes that there now exists a nascent digital culture, full of its own values, that expresses itself throughout the globe online and offline on a daily basis. This digital culture represents the first truly global culture in history. The chapter then reviews how culture in general, and the digital culture in particular, influences our core values. But what are core values? Core values are our fundamental beliefs. Our core values work collectively to shape our mindset or day-to-day perspective on things. Our mindset, in turn, drives our strategic objectives and tactical actions. Mindset, then, can be understood as the extent of a person's or organization's integration into a particular culture—in this case, the digital culture. The core values of the digital culture shape the digital mindset of individuals and organizations alike; the digital mindset, in turn, influences organizational values and culture and is the foundation of digital integration and transformation. Digital transformation is the process of integrating digital technologies throughout the organization to modernize and improve business processes, culture, and stakeholder experiences. The chapter concludes by submitting that, for organizations to have success in the digital culture and achieve true digital transformation, executives need to adopt a digital mindset and integrate it into how they communicate and serve their stakeholders.
