ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to consider aspects of human resource management in international companies. The chapter also looks at human resource choices and selection and training in an international context. Specifically, the chapter will:

Identify and examine the different groups of employees available to international firms;

Differentiate among parent country nationals, host country nationals, and third country nationals, and consider the benefits and drawbacks associated with each group;

Discuss these groups in terms of ethnocentric, polycentric, and geocentric staffing approaches;

Relate staffing issues to the international life cycle of products and services;

Consider other staffing issues, including the use of foreign guest workers;

Examine the importance of millennials in today’s workforce, and discuss ways to ensure top talent is used effectively on a global basis;

Look at the relationship of organizational strategies to staffing choices;

Discuss selection and training and how these relate to staffing choices.
