ABSTRACT

The digital workplace, the velocity change, and diversity underscore the importance of understanding organizational communication. Communication is one of the most dominant activities occurring in any work setting. The need to study, understand, and effectively use organizational communication has been, for many individuals, an after-the-fact enlightenment. Communication enhances coordination, increases motivation, provides information, persuades for positive change, and helps in socialization. Effective communication is critical for leaders, managers, and supervisors to succeed. In spite of the importance of communication in and to organizations, studying the subject seems to present a paradox for many individuals. On the surface, communication, especially in non-print areas, might seem to be too simple to really need to be carefully analyzed. In the communication process, each individual is both an actor and a reactor to the communication events. Identifying communication as a process is a key to developing our understanding of organizational communication activities.
