ABSTRACT

This chapter examines how walled-village women have developed their own agency in the walled village and how they have transformed gender dynamics within the villages. It explores how women have developed their own agency from household to village level. The chapter looks at how the blurring of the rural/urban divide has facilitated women’s changing roles and allowed them to become more proactive in decision-making processes at home and beyond. It also examines how rural/urban migrants have become proactive voices that alter gender dynamics in the walled villages with the closing of rural/urban divide. The chapter presents the challenges faced by walled-village women, which are also shared by their urban counterparts. Walled-village women’s experiences are a reflection of what is happening in Hong Kong under the rule of China—a China that aspires to become a leading global power. External factors like rural and market-oriented reform alter the everyday life of Chinese practice.
