ABSTRACT

Whilst the other chapters in this book deal with teaching the curriculum through oracy, this chapter gives some ideas for exercises that explicitly develop students' oracy skills and that are especially relevant for teachers of English, drama and PSCHE and for form tutors. The exercises are The Um-er Game (which encourages fluency and use of standard English), Defending the Indefensible (which looks at persuasive speaking), Giving and Following Instructions (which supports accurate instruction giving and careful listening), How Are You Feeling? (which focusses on non-verbal communication) and Expand-Contract (which helps students both to develop ideas in greater depth and to get to the point more quickly).
