ABSTRACT

Even though there are different nuances in the legislation of various jurisdictions, principally the legal duty of an auditor is to express an independent opinion on whether the financial statements of the audited entity fairly present the state of financial affairs of that entity. In some jurisdictions this is also referred to as a ‘true and fair view’. In some jurisdictions this duty might have slightly different elements to it, especially in so far as the review of documents that accompany the financial statements is concerned. However, by and large, the duty to express a fairness opinion on financial statements is universal across jurisdictions.
