ABSTRACT

There is a saying that every new generation is not primarily inheriting from the previous generation but rather forwarding the fortune to the next generation. Mature families face a challenge related to the ever-increasing number of heirs. In case the family adopts the principle of transferring one generation's wealth equally to the next generation and there are a number of offspring in each new generation, it might be a problem, especially when the wealth is not expanding. Any succession disputes are resolved by means of an agreement as to who will carry the flame, managing and growing dynastic holdings as time goes on. The Bonniers meet regularly to discuss corporate governance matters, while the Wallenberg dynasty has had a formal family council for many years. The shipping industry has traditionally been the purview of men with patriarchal lines of succession.
