ABSTRACT

When one starts inquiring about the history of these various tribes of the Togo hinterland one is faced with an almost complete ignorance on the part of the native of any past beyond the first encounters with the Ashanti. The Konkomba of Palba, in flight from the Dagomba, reached the Oti. There was no means of crossing until a crocodile came out of the water and asked what all their cries were about. The Ashanti is a great eater of snails; in fact, snails are in some parts of the country practically the only meat. It is said of that same old man that he had another magical power which enabled him to send forth his calabash to look for food and to return filled. The one tells the reason why men, who formerly died of shame, do so no longer. Anansi had three sons, the eldest of whom was named Ntrekuma.
