      ABSTRACT

In most books dealing with West Africa there is found a long discussion as to whether the belief by the natives in a Supreme Being, the Father of All, is one of native origin or one that has been introduced to the native mind from outside sources. But all writers seem to agree that the worship of the Supreme Deity is quite insignificant in its importance in so far as the everyday life of the natives is concerned when compared with that of the minor deities, who are termed his 'sons'. Now Nyame in Ashanti has many sons. Of these his favourite was Bia, who was the eldest of the family. A second son was named Tano. In due course the children grew to manhood, and as was and is the custom their father determined to award them some present to mark the occasion.
