ABSTRACT

To begin understanding how educational processes work or do not work, it is helpful to have knowledge of social theories. Theories provide frameworks that help explain and predict accepted patterns and practices between individuals and social systems. Theories help us to think differently and are the basis for many cultural perspectives. Subsequently, theories are useful in examining and coping with educational issues and problems by serving as a basis for educational approaches. They help us make sense of our world, including our classrooms.

Chapter 2 will present basic philosophical and theoretical views associated with sociology and how these perspectives influence music education. The chapter’s premise is that understanding differing perspectives and social constructs helps music teachers expand their social awareness of students’ backgrounds. An awareness of different perspectives further provides music teachers with an understanding of what different cultural groups want education to accomplish.
