ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with exploration of work-life balance strategies for new English teachers by considering the idea of communicating effectively with students and their families. The chapter explores three key tactics for communicating clearly and effectively with students and families: weekly or biweekly family newsletters, weekly student agendas, and classroom websites. Creating a weekly or biweekly newsletter and sharing with students' families is a great tactic for fostering an environment of active communication. Just as family newsletters create an environment of active communication with families, weekly student agendas foster a feeling of communication with students. Classroom websites are excellent tools for facilitating communication with students and families. Continued active communication through weekly agendas provides students with the information they need to stay on track in individual classes. The chapter examines two recommendations that can help to put the communication strategies described into action: start using these tactics at the beginning of the school year and adapt communication material if necessary.
