ABSTRACT

In Denmark, the first organisation of people with some kind of disability was the organisation of deaf people which was founded in 1866. It was the time after the enactment of the constitution and the introduction of parliamentarianism in Denmark. The story of the organisation further revealed a situation around 1910 where the professionals in the field turned towards the other strategy which led to a conflict between the professionals and the deaf people of the organization. Simultaneously at the beginning of the 1960s a new trend within sociology began to focus on stigma and discourses. In the 1960s sociology turned towards the study of interaction in everyday life with an onset in the work of George Herbert Mead. In the 1970s, sociology kind of left the focus on the individual life story and the symbolic interactions of everyday life.
