ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book investigates the reasons behind the urgent new calls for action. It presents some pioneering education initiatives already underway which may very well offer a template/model for future educational and policy models. The book offers a proposal for including new stakeholders to change the harsh fact that only one per cent of refugee youth currently have access to higher education. All school leaders stressed the need to increase the number of secondary teachers as a precursor to further expansion in access to higher education. Both providers of secondary and tertiary education were receptive to the idea of the creation of a 'bridging course' that would enable students to transition effectively from secondary to tertiary education. The 'bridging course' was then planned to specifically address criteria such as levels of attainment, fee levels, teacher support and supervision, and accreditation and credit rating.
