ABSTRACT
The South African War saw poems submitted en masse to the daily newspapers. The Daily Mail in particular received hundreds of them. Here, a nightwatchman has submitted a poem that he wrote whilst he sat through the night. Perhaps the fact that only a few lines are reproduced testifies to its quality in the eyes of the newspaper editor.
