ABSTRACT

An edible clouding agent, such as palm oil, is used as a food additive in order to make beverages primarily look cloudier. This is a desired look by some manufacturers who want cloudy beverages so they can look more “natural” and appealing. In September 2014, customers in Taiwan were told that a Taiwanese cooking oil suppler, Chang Guann Co., had made substandard cooking oil by mixing lard oil with restaurant and slaughterhouse waste. The altered cooking oil was used by hundreds of bakeries and eateries in Taiwan. OwlTing’s e-commerce platform has developed a blockchain on the food supply in Taiwan to track every step in the food distribution process. The online platform connects consumers directly with producers of food products in Taiwan. Rice farmers in Taiwan rely on the rain from the typhoons in the late summer and early autumn to give the crops much needed water for the early growth phase.
