ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the relationship between the firm and its employees. A firm can only survive in the long term if it has highly motivated employees who are committed to the goals of the firm and are loyal to the firm. For the employees, they must be in a job where they are satisfied with their current status and are fully engaged in their job functions. In this chapter concepts related to corporate sustainability that are discussed include: an overall framework relating human resources and corporate sustainability; socially responsible human resource management; job satisfaction; charismatic leadership; employee identity; employee recruitment; employee engagement; employee volunteerism programs; and employee trust. The chapter concludes with a discussion on SAP’s commitment to hiring employees with autism and starts with a discussion on Tesco’s non-conventional treatment of its employees.
