ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book reviews the historical development of culture in foreign language teaching. It analyzes the existing models of teaching culture in foreign language education in both native English and non-native English countries. The book explores Byram's ground-breaking model that provides a guide for how to explicitly teach culture in foreign language teaching. It draws the sociocultural context of language learning and the interaction between cultures during language learning. The book examines models developed by Risager, K. and Chen, S. Their models have acknowledged the political forces at work in education, in that governments decide the nature of the curriculum based on the nation's power relations with other countries in the world. The book describes integrative model that is recommended for teaching cultures in English as an international language.
