Introduction

This introductory chapter provides a rationale for this book. It outlines how the changing educational and global living landscapes require more independent learning from all of us, while at the same time, it points out that we are not (and that educational systems have not) optimally prepared us for this. It also presents a theory of the independent learning experience, to allow readers to anchor their thoughts before proceeding with the rest of the book.
