ABSTRACT

The military faces several major challenges created by extremist propaganda. The emergence of organized groups like ISIL (ISIS) was largely driven by extremist propaganda that became a major military and political challenge. This propaganda has also radicalized local populations or individual citizens in Iraq and Afghanistan to do harm to coalition forces for which they worked or to which they were supposedly allied. The military also faces an insider threat as a result of members becoming radicalized to extremist views and violence. This chapter examines how the U.S. military is working to diminish the impact of extremist propaganda in social media.
