ABSTRACT

Teachers of economics and business studies have an important role to play in the delivery of economic and industrial understanding (EIU) both within economics and business studies and across the whole curriculum. This chapter explores the relationship between technical and vocational education Initiative (TVEI) and economic and industrial understanding. It reviews the project's experience, to take stock of what has been achieved and to record some of the problems encountered. In order to understand the emergence of EIU as a cross-curricular theme, it is necessary to draw upon sociological analysis of the changes in advanced industrial economies which triggered the Great Debate. Although curriculum coherence is the duty of the school, and specifically the head teacher, there is an expectation that the LEA will provide guidance and support. The early development of pre-vocational education owed much to the pioneering efforts of the further education unit (FEU) who had a particular responsibility for curriculum development in the FE sector.
