ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on those who works in support centres. The staff plays a crucial role in determining whether or not the programme offered within centres will be a success or a failure for the pupils concerned. The relationships between teachers and pupils, and the morale of the staff are clearly amongst the factors which help determine how successful the centres will be. The chapter presents information relating to the numbers of professional staff, their teaching assignments and other responsibilities. It is concerned with authority structures within centres, the relationships between staff, the relationships between staff and pupils, and the atmosphere in centres. The chapter explores the effect of support centres on those who teach in them. It focuses on professional opportunities, in-service training and the dangers of professional isolation.
