ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book explores the variety of reasons that English teachers use film in their classroom, determines the number and types of courses offered in film study and film making in the secondary schools of Delaware County and determines the objectives of film and English teachers when teaching a film. The thematic approach to film study is shared by both film teachers and English teachers who teach the film as literature. The thematic approach includes the humanistic approach, the innoculative approach, and the sociological/cultural/ideological approach. When using the sociological/cultural/ideological approach, one analyzes the sociological/ cultural/ideological implications of the film. The objectives film teachers say they are pursuing are perfectly congruent with what film textbook writers feel are the objectives of visual analysis. Their primary analytic objectives are related to the teaching of film as film.
