ABSTRACT

This chapter assesses and evaluates the economic cost of dengue in Singapore using primary data from 1980 to 2007. The estimated economic cost of dengue is provided for first, for a low incidence year in 2000, second, for a high incidence year in 2005 and third, the more recent medium incidence years of 2006 and 2007. Other costs, such as the cost of dengue prevention and control incurred by various government agencies, are also included. The cost from lost tourism is identified as an important economic cost of dengue to Singapore. Therefore, in estimating the economic costs associated with dengue, the readers take into consideration the following. First, the percentage of hospitalization varies from 80 to 90 per cent for the period 1980–2005. Second, mortality costs are estimated using the VOSL of S$2.05 million. Third, the average number of days of hospitalization is 3.7 days.
