ABSTRACT

Relationships are the foundational and critical building blocks of effective schools, character education, and character development. They comprise one of the three fundamental human needs according to Self-determination Theory, which informs many excellent character education initiatives. Marilyn Watson does a great job of applying attachment theory to education, and people will explore that more in the sections on Intrinsic Motivation and on Developmental Pedagogy. Essentially, attachment theory says that, for many species including humans, infant bonding to a caretaker is an evolutionary mechanism necessary for healthy development. A wonderful model of marital relationships describes the decision to marry as often based on passing a series of relational filters. Each of these can be the rationale and blueprint for designing experiences in the classroom and/or school that increase the likelihood of healthy relationships forming. An important addendum to relationships is collaboration.
