ABSTRACT

There are two broad categories of implementation strategies for leveraging role modeling to nurture the flourishing of human goodness in students. One is to increase the likelihood that the people they encounter in the school community are positive role models. The other is to expose them to depictions of role models, for example, in literature and history. All adults who work with or around kids are models, whether positive or negative, of character. Hence, people need strategies to maximize the degree to which those adults actually model good character. In any organization, there are two basic paths to adult character—or professional competency—for that matter: Selection and formation. Schools usually have a small “search committee” composed of leadership and select teachers. One strategy would be to expand that committee to get more perspectives, for example, parents and support staff and even students.
