ABSTRACT

With the implementation of the Peelian model of policing, modern policing in both the United States and the United Kingdom has developed similar, but sometimes strikingly different, models. This can be seen in many different aspects of policing, but particularly in the use of volunteer, or non-paid police. This chapter illustrates the modern use of volunteer police in the United States and the United Kingdom with contemporary examples that both show the incredible value and potential liability that volunteer policing can have for a modern policing service. Examples of heroism related to the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando, Florida, a serial arsonist in Los Angeles, California, and a violent incident at an Oklahoma are provided. Volunteer police line-of-duty deaths in the United States and the United Kingdom are discussed. Notorious negative incidents involving volunteer police are also provided.
