ABSTRACT

Policing depends on public involvement in the detection and investigation of criminal activity, and volunteer policing is the “tip of the spear” for community involvement in policing. This chapter will review innovative use of special constables, auxiliary, and reserve police in the US and UK police services. The use of volunteers in specialized areas such as marine patrol, cybercrime investigations, police canine units, search and rescue teams, mounted patrol, and criminal investigations will be discussed. In addition, the leadership, management, and recognition of volunteers is examined, and examples of notorious volunteer police in history and modern times are provided.
