ABSTRACT

This chapter includes original research regarding police reserves and auxiliaries in the United States and special constables in the United Kingdom. This primary research by the authors includes survey responses regarding the functions of those who participate in volunteer policing. This chapter will also review specials and reserve police officers from a larger context, examining the lack of available information in the United States on the number of police volunteers, and the number of police specials by force in the United Kingdom. Demographics of volunteer police, policing duties, motivations to serve, and varying levels of compensation are discussed.
