ABSTRACT

Government has made an important and constructive contribution towards the political development of Ashanti. To-day the Government has put an end to tribal warfare, and different tasks are expected of a Native Authority. In the political sphere the chief is under the control of Government. The chief's economic position has been assailed by the new changes. The chief was the link between the tribe and the Golden Stool, and so in this way the tribe was brought into the circle of the States which composed the Ashanti Union. Though the Confederacy Council has agreed on making a distinction between the private property of a chief and stool property, the people generally do not make a distinction. The difficulty of the chief is increased by the fact that many stools have been encumbered with debts. Stool debts caused by litigation generally arise out of litigation over land and particularly out of boundary disputes.
