ABSTRACT
The tourism and travel industry has historically struggled with diversity and there are many examples of overt and more subtle discriminatory policies in the provision of accommodation and travel services. Racial, national and ethnic orientation discrimination impedes the lives of millions of people every day. It consists of everything from milder forms of intolerance to more sinister forms of racial/ethnic hatred fuelling ethnic genocide and hate crimes. Distinctions made between citizens and non-citizens are not covered by the definition. One of the most known examples of institutional racial discrimination is the apartheid system in force in South Africa until 1992. At the national level, many countries have domestic legislation prohibiting racial and ethnic origin discrimination. The United States has a long history with racial discrimination. The anti-discrimination regulation covering race and ethnic origin has often been adopted earlier and is more wide-reaching than anti-discrimination legislation protecting several other vulnerable groups.
