ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a general overview of international human rights and labour standards in the travel and tourism sector. It addresses the right to freedom of association and collective bargaining among tourism and travel workers. The fundamental labour-related human rights from the International Bill of Rights are further elaborated upon in specific conventions addressing labour rights. The right to freedom of association, including the right to form and join trade unions for the protection of a person’s collective interests, is a well-established human right. The prohibition on subjecting another human to forced labour is a deeply rooted human rights principle. No one shall be required to perform forced or compulsory labour, no one shall be held in servitude and no one shall be held in slavery. Myanmar has had a long history of forced labour by the military government, which ruled the country from the 1960s until the first elections were held in 2010.
