ABSTRACT

The dawn of the eighteenth century witnessed increase in European visitors as new European trading companies arrived and the old ones expanded their activities. The English East India Company also brought some experienced administrators. The two visitors to Bihar, William Hodges and William Daniell were artists. Hodges had been recruited by the Company to visit the area under its rule and prepare sketches of important monuments. W. Daniell, a celebrated artist, came with his uncle. He was seeking his fortune. Emma Roberts accompanied her sister whose husband was recruited by the Company during early decades of the nineteenth century. Sir Charles D'Oyly established Behar Litho Press and printed several booklets for circulation among new learners of English and Hindi. D'Oyly was contributed to the development of Company or Patna School of Painting. Many painters were hired by the Company itself to accompany the officials on their journey and make paintings of the places they visited.
