ABSTRACT

Modern education was introduced in Bihar by the British when they opened a school at Patna in 1835. The government set up Patna College in 1863, the first in Bihar. The establishment of Patna University was a turning point in the history of science education in Bihar. Its commitment to science education can be deduced from several measures it adopted to promote higher education in the science subjects. A scheme drawn up for the establishment of a Science College by a subcommittee of the Syndicate of Patna University was forwarded to the government in May 1918. Postgraduate classes in Statistics began in 1947 under the headship of Professor D. N. Lal. The teachers formed the Patna Science College Philosophical Society with the principal as the ex-officio president. In January 1948, within a decade and a half, the Patna Science College had the privilege of hosting the Annual Session of the Indian Science Congress again, it was a memorable event.
