A home-school diary or the use of e-mail helps teachers and parents to stay in contact. Where a school has noticed that a child has fallen behind and has undertaken internal assessments with a view to identifying a special need, parents must be informed. The child is added to the special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) registers and will receive additional support for their identified need. Most boroughs have Children with Disabilities Team who only oversee a fraction of the children with SEND in their borough, but the school can make a referral to this team. The new arrangements, parents have a great deal of power and must be involved in the writing of their education health and care plan for their children. “Research has shown that children who come from a home where there is anxiety come into school anxious,” Lorraine Petersen says. There are a number of reasons why a parent may want a ‘label’ for their children.
