ABSTRACT
Hugo Chavez was elected President of Venezuela in 1998 and re-elected in 2000. However, many Venezuelans were disillusioned with his rule. On April 11th 2002, large anti-government demonstrations engulfed Caracas. As those marches met pro-government counter-demonstrations, shots were fired and many were killed or wounded. Opposition leaders blamed the President for the deaths, and, with the help of military units, captured Chavez, replacing him with Pedro Carmona, the chief of the Venezuelan Chamber of Commerce. This chapter covers how the newspapers presented one of the seminal moments in modern Latin American history.
