ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts covered in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book examines athletes' involvement in organized sports, starting at perhaps five or six and continuing to the professional level. Survival is a critical reality, with the participants seeking to advance through successively more advanced levels. Early in the 20th century, city-wide recreation activities became increasingly common. During this era a number of private sports organizations including Pop Warner football and Little League baseball began to establish themselves. Commitment, with participants investing time and energy in their sports activity, is also necessary for athletes seeking retention. They are more likely to commit themselves to a team if they believe their coaches and teammates value their contribution. A study indicated that world-class, deeply committed athletes often display extreme mental toughness.
