ABSTRACT

Employment opportunities in agribusiness can reasonably be expected to fall over the next few decades, posing significant challenges for government but potential opportunities for farmers and investors alike. Farms and agricultural operations will have to be run very differently, primarily due to advancements in technology such as sensors, devices, machines and information technology, which are already in use in many advanced, large production agribusinesses. The drift towards the legalisation of cannabis worldwide means that an entirely new legal crop, and with it a very significant new part of the agribusiness industry, is on its way to being incorporated into business activity in many countries, starting in 2018 with Canada. The skill of agribusiness investment over the coming decades will be in blending highly specific sectoral expertise, whether in avocados or packaging, with a relentless focus on shareholder value and stakeholder satisfaction.
